Dear Friends,
Remember Amílcar from our last update? He's a doctor now.
On June 21st, Amílcar graduated from medical school after eight years of long hours of studying and night shifts at the hospital, and a year of social service at a small hospital eight hours from home. We are so proud of his accomplishments and can't wait to see what is in store for his future. For now, he is seeking employment and applying to secure a coveted spot in the Gynecology Residency Program in San Pedro Sula.
An OYE scholar since 2008, Amílcar has been with OYE since the early years. We invite you to watch this video to hear Amílcar's story and OYE's impact on his life.
Amílcar is not our only recent college graduate. On July 15th, Dayana graduated from the Francisco Morazán National Pedagogical University, with a degree in elementary education. She will continue her position as a third-grade teacher at a bilingual school in one of San Pedro Sula's underserved neighborhoods before applying for a position at a local public school next year.
In addition to Amílcar and Dayana, four more of our scholars graduated from an 18-month program to equip them to work as bilingual agents at call centers, including intensive English study. All four are currently employed and two will be enrolling at the university this fall. Before year's end, 16 more of our scholars will have completed this program.
The incredible accomplishments of these young people would not be possible without their drive and perseverance, the encouragement of their families, and the support of OYE, which is made possible through the generous gifts of people like you.
In 12 years, OYE has supported 172 young women and men to graduate from high school and 20 from college. Over the next three years, we hope to support a minimum of 100 more young women and men to graduate from high school and college.
For this hope to become a reality, we need you.
There are numerous ways you can contribute to the growth and sustainability of our programs. Making a gift today is one important way. Another is the simple act of forwarding this letter to your friends and family - and even better, taking a moment to add your own personal message on why you care about OYE.
From all of us at OYE, thank you for your commitment and your continued investment in the present and future of youth in El Progreso. We are so grateful.
Kind regards,
Amanda
