Honduras consistently has one of the highest primary school dropout rates in Central America. While primary education is free and obligatory for every child between the ages of 7 and 14, the associated costs and income-loss to the household when a child is in school is often too much for families to bear. Each year, OYE's programs provide 70+ promising students from low-income families with access to an integral education and reach hundreds more local youth through community outreach.
In addition to receiving a partial academic scholarship to cover some educational expenses, OYE scholarship recipients participate in leadership training and capacity-building workshops where they are provided the tools necessary to serve as agents of social change in their schools and communities. Furthermore, youth are given the opportunity to explore complex social issues and express themselves through community action projects in art, magazine, radio, graphic design and sports.
In a country where youth are the most valuable yet overlooked asset, OYE provides the opportunity for over 70 local youth to access secondary and university-level education and acquire the knowledge and skills to break the cycle of poverty and create positive change in their communities. As agents of social change in their communities, they contribute to the creation of a better Honduras for their generation and generations to come.
