What We Did This Summer

Dear Friends,

We have some really exciting news to share with you!

At the end of September, two of our scholars, both young women, completed an 18-month program to acquire the necessary skills - including English - to become bilingual agents at call centers, a growing industry in Honduras. Before this program, which provides full scholarships to disadvantaged youth, the opportunity to learn english was accesible only to upper and middle-class families with sufficient income to pay for a private, bilingual education. While the program fees are subsidized by the Honduran government, OYE's "Adelante Jóvenes" Scholarship Program provides a stipend for 16 youth to cover the costs of the daily commute from El Progreso to San Pedro Sula, the principal barrier that El Progreso's youth face in accessing higher education.

Do you want to hear something even better? Kelyn, one of the two graduates, was immediately hired to work at KM2 Solutions, a call center that has supported OYE since 2012. With the income from her new job, Kelyn has the opportunity to contribute to her family's income and continue her university studies. We are so proud of Kelyn and so thankful for the generous support of our donors that make success stories like hers possible!

In other news, OYE's youth-led programs have been in action all summer - and fall! Here's a quick rundown of what they've been up to since we last updated you in July!

Arte La Calle
Youth in the art program have been busy drawing, painting, jewelry-making, and learning guitar. They also made 15 piñatas to donate to local schools, churches, and community groups to celebrate Children's Day on September 10th.

OYE Comunica
Guided by in-house film expert Dylan, several youth have been filming and producing short documentaries. The radio students participated in professional workshops to hone their skills in writing scripts, presenting, and producing radio spots and programs.

DiseñOYE
Ten students in the graphic design program have completed an intensive diploma course on graphic design, focused on developing creative thinking and basic graphic design skills.

Deportes en Acción
Youth in the sports program have participated in numerous local runs, including the annual La Prensa Marathon (10.5K) in San Pedro Sula. In August, they organized yet another successful Copa OYE soccer tournament involving 250+ local youth in a fun day of friendly competition. Now they are focused on Taekwondo!

At OYE, sustainability is our priority. Our ability to achieve and grow our mission is only possible through the generosity of our diverse family of donors and supporters. Thank you for being a part of our family. We hope you will continue to join us on this journey to provide life-changing opportunities to deserving youth.

In appreciation,
Amanda
