Willian's Story

Hello Friends,

Today I want to introduce you to one of our incredible young people—Willian. For those of you who receive regular postal mail from us, you may recognize him from our summer letter and annual report. Keep on reading to learn more or jump right to the video to hear his story in his words.

Hailing from a family of smallholder farmers in a remote mountain community, Willian truly overcame the odds. From a young age, Willian knew he wanted to stay in school. Since the school in his community only goes up to ninth grade, he had to commute back and forth to the city every weekend to go to high school. When he was unable to get a ride or when the roads were washed out during rainy season, he would have to walk more than two hours down the mountain and back up again to attend classes. While his parents never had the opportunity to go to school, they understood the value of education and supported Willian every step of the way.

With the support of his family and a scholarship from OYE, Willian persevered and became one of only three university graduates from his community. While most of the young men his age are working the land or have migrated to the US or elsewhere, Willian has graduated from university with a degree in agribusiness administration—with aspirations to further his education—and is making his way in the working world. He has become a real-life example to the next generation of how their lives and futures can be different. In his words: "Without a doubt, I would not be where I am today without OYE."

Likewise, OYE would not be here today—and supporting so many young people to reach their potential—without the support of our generous and growing community. We truly can't thank you enough.

In appreciation,
Amanda

P.S. Don't forget to watch the video to hear his story in his words!
