Working hard to overcome stigma

By Lucinda Kerschensteiner | Founding Director

Uhambo fights hard in communities all around South Africa for children with disabilities and with such a commitment, we create social inclusion and developmental opportunities to enable them to reach their full potential. Our on the ground team in Warmbaths, South Africa has been dedicated to improving the conditions for children with disabilities in their community. Recently the team has accomplished the following:

  • Networking with a very successful home in another community to exchange resources and ideas that can be implemented at the Huis Talje Children's Home
  • One of the challenges in this region is hiring and retaining qualified workers as caregivers. These are typically low-skilled and low wage positions. To work on overcoming this, our team is communicating with several organisations around the world that can provide suitably qualified and passionate individuals to spend time at Huis Talje and assist with the children and provide training to our staff.
  • The director of Huis Talje has also ben reaching out into the local community in an effort to change perceptions, train and sensitize the community to the care and needs of these special children.
  • Lastly, the Home has sourced a food product that will greatly help with the nutritional needs of many of the children. The Home has also identified some opportunities to receive some donations for food.

These are some of the very foundational steps that Uhambo strives to accomplish to build the capacity of these homes, develop a welcoming environment in the community and build a network of successful homes in the region that can work together to provide these children a healthy and happy future.

This foundation allows for Uhambo to then provide training to the caregivers, education and development opportunities for the children and promotion further social inclusion in the area.

Thank you for your support and contributing to their future!
