Our goal is to develop closer relationships with teachers and children in rural Mexican communities and to provide high quality year-round projects that encourage a love of reading. We can do this by growing our volunteer program, expanding our pop-up library services, and offering a creative writing summer camp for kids who otherwise don't have access to books, libraries, and summer learning opportunities.
Although there are more literate people in Mexico now than ever before, fewer books are actually being read. Increasing access to books is not enough. Projects that make reading and/or writing fun must be included. We have learned that donated books just collect dust unless they are integrated into a reading program that includes teachers and parents.
By working with rural elementary schools year round, the Libros para Todos team is able to more closely develop relationships with teachers, parents and children as well as to making reading and writing activities a part of everyday life for children. This outreach program will allow schools to have access to books, a reading coordinator and volunteers to ensure that children are inspired and encouraged to keep up the habit of reading throughout the year.
This program will reach approximately 7 schools including approximately 350 children. The habit of reading must be developed at a young age in order for it to last a lifetime.
