This project will provide access to free outdoor education programming for 60 children living in poverty, positively impacting academic performance, social and emotional learning, and awareness of and connection to the outdoors.
While the median income in the San Francisco Bay Area is high, it masks a chronic disparity in resource allocation, with child poverty rates as high as 27.9% in some Bay Area cities. Children living in poverty have limited access to the natural world for reasons that include lack of access to parks and green spaces, limited outdoor recreational programs, and other barriers are related to cost and access to transportation. Although many outdoor education programs exist, most are cost prohibitive.
Vida Verde provides free outdoor education programming for high-poverty schools in the San Francisco Bay Area. Program staff are trained in culturally and linguistically responsive teaching and behavior management, and Vida Verde partners with teachers, schools, and families to ensure that all students have a chance to experience the positive impacts of being in the natural world.
Both quantitative and qualitative survey data indicates that Vida Verde has a long-term positive impact on - Academic Performance - Social and Emotional Learning - Environmental Awareness and Connections to Nature
