This project will help deliver critical orthopedic trauma equipment to the Haitian state hospitals and help accommodate their overwhelming need in the wake of the August 14th 7.2 magnitude earthquake. This not only significantly change lives on an individual level, but will also help curb the social and economic impact of limited access to orthopedics by preventing unnecessary amputations and long term physical disabilities.
Only a small percentage (6-8%) of the Haitian National Budget goes towards healthcare and 90% of that pay salaries leaving little if any left to properly equip State Hospitals, particularly for Orthopedic Surgery which is inherently an expensive service line requiring expensive infrastructural and equipment costs. Most NGOs are reluctant to work within the state hospital system which greatly accentuates the health care accessibility gap for Haiti's poorest most vulnerable citizens.
In the wake of the recent earthquake, we are watching our Haitian partners thrive in the face of tragedy. After 11 years of ORSI's supplemental support, we are seeing our efforts tested through the brilliant and capable surgeons caring for their own on the front lines. Despite how far we have come, these surgeons are still operating in extremely resource limited conditions. The best way we can support them now is to provide access to essential supplies they need to continue doing their work.
by providing these essential resources we can prevent countless individuals from suffering unnecessary amputations or enduring preventable long-term disabilities. This is especially important in that communities facing healthcare accessibility challenges are rarely equipped with social services and supportive infrastructure required for disabled citizens to maintain an optimal quality of life. As a result, our efforts are sure to demonstrate a profound humanitarian impact on multiple levels.
