Brighter, Cleaner Faces means less Trachoma!

There are over 1.5 million blind people in Ethiopia, over 1 million of whom would not be blind if basic eye care services were readily available. Trachoma, a painful yet treatable disease, is one of the most common causes of blindness in Ethiopia. Trachoma can be found mainly where people live in crowded conditions with limited access to clean water. Poor hygiene and a lack of latrines and sanitation facilities increase the spread of trachoma.

The public health strategy for the elimination of trachoma is SAFE: Surgery for advanced disease, Antibiotics to clear infection, Facial cleanliness and Environmental improvement.

Orbis follows the SAFE strategy including the Facial cleanliness and Environmental improvement through partnership with Ethiopia’s ‘One WASH’ programme. This programme is committed to increasing the country’s water supply and encouraging good hygiene.

To do this, Orbis facilitates eye care clubs in local schools teaching students to adopt good facial and hand hygiene. The children then teach their families, which has a fantastic ripple effect. Orbis, in partnership with other NGO’s working in the area, refurbishes existing water supplies so that these families have access to clean water.

This work ensures that many people in southern Ethiopia are no longer at risk of avoidable blindness. Improved access to water and sanitation and the knowledge of good hygiene will ensure that future generations will be free from the threat of blindness.

Year on year, we are delighted to see whole communities of people with brighter, cleaner faces, with fewer people suffering from trachoma. This wouldn’t be possible without your generous support. Thank you!
