Trachoma is a debilitating, painful disease that can rob communities of their sight if left untreated. These vulnerable communities then become trapped in a cycle of poverty. However, something as simple as washing your face and hands with clean water can help break the cycle of infection.
Orbis follows the World Health Organisation's WASH program to help prevent the spread of the disease. By building water points to give better access to clean water, builiding latrines to control waste and the fly population, and educating communities about the importance of good hygiene, with the help of our donors, we transform the lives of individuals, families and communities when we release them from the grip of trachoma.
In a school play in Dita an Orbis eye care school club the students worked hard to educate their communitites about the importance of using the water points to wash their hands and faces to prevent the spread of trachoma. Thanks to our donors help Dita is now below the WTO threshold for trachoma infection according to recent surveys in the area. But there is still more work to do!
