Celebrating Opus 118 at the End of Year Concert
By Rebekah Harkins | Associate Director, Programs & Development
Opus 118 students are excited to be gearing up for this year's End-of-Year Concert! This year is special as we are not only celebrating our students' achievements, but also celebrating the 20th anniversary of our founding.
The support of donors like you throughout the year have helped make these students' in-school and after-school lessons possible. As you know, Opus 118 provides teachers, music, instruments, and other materials to students, many of whom would not otherwise have music instruction. Your gifts have also helped ensure that these valuable programs can continue during a challenging period.
This year's concert will be held on Thursday, June 14, 2012 at the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Admission is free and the doors open at 6:30pm. For more information about the concert, please email us at registrar@opus118.org. We hope you can join us to see first-hand how your contribution makes a difference in our students' lives!

Early Childhood Music Classes at Opus 118

Did you know that Opus 118 offers early childhood music classes as part of the After-School Program?
Since 2008, we have offered group classes for children between the ages of 2 and 5 using Music Within, a curriculum designed for Opus 118 by Sara Zur, Ph.D. Students and their caregivers learn basic music vocabulary through an interactive exploration of sounds and songs. We not only offer these classes onsite at our 125th Street facility, but also offer classes at partnering locations throughout Harlem. In the 2010-2011 school year, we had a record number of participants, with more than 450 students benefiting from these classes! According to one of the classroom teachers at our partner sites, students are better prepared for kindergarten because of Music Within. Children develop their motor skills by using hand percussion instruments. Many parents have also commented that their children were more outgoing as a result of the classes; those who participated in the onsite classes added that they looked forward to learning with their children on Saturday afternoons.
Our early childhood instructor, Catherine Meyers, is wonderful asset to Opus 118 and we're thrilled to be offering onsite classes through the After-School Program again this spring. Saturday classes are scheduled to begin on March 3rd and are offered at very affordable tuition rates, fulfilling Opus 118's commitment to the accessibility of music instruction in the greater Harlem area. Let our offices know if you, or someone you know, might be interested in joining the spring sessions of Music Within.

Chamber Music at Opus 118
By Rebekah Harkins | Associate Director, Programs & Development
Thanks to the generous support of donors like you, the 2011-2012 school year has gotten off to a great start at Opus 118. Students in our After-School Program have been working hard in their lessons and performance groups, and some participated our first Music Hour of the year on November, 21st. These monthly recitals are open to the public and provide a wonderful opportunity for our students to share their progress with friends, family members, and the rest of the Opus 118 community. To find out when the next Music Hour will be held, please visit our Upcoming Events page at www.opus118.org.
We are also proud to announce a new partnership with the Harlem Chamber Players that aims to bring more chamber music opportunities to our students in the After-School Program. The first of these opportunities is a holiday concert at Saint Mary's Episcopal Church on December 10, 2011 at 6pm. Students from the After-School Program will play alongside of the Harlem Chamber Players in works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Arcangelo Corelli, Karl Jenkins, as well as traditional Christmas carols. We would love to have you join us for this special concert. To learn more about it and to reserve your tickets, please call us at (212) 831-4455.
In the meantime, have a wonderful Thanksgiving and a joyous holiday season!
