The educational system in Kenya has undergone recent changes, creating a new level called Junior Secondary which includes grade 7-9. This means that grade 9 is now housed in primary school buildings rather than secondary school buildings as before and it is now the year when the students take their national exam before moving on to secondary school. Before this, primary school ended with a national exam at the end of grade 8 which is were we focused our Prep for Success Program. As a result, we have adjusted our programming to work with grade 9 students, preparing them for the new national exam.
The need is as great as before, and the number of students we serve reamins about the same. Our teaching assistants go into three local Focus Schools where they strengthen literacy and numeracy skills, provide small group tutoring, one-one-one mentoring and a very important daily lunch.
The big difference is that the curriculum has totally changed, requiring our teaching assistants to learn new topics in order to effectively provide the educational support that the students need. It has been a big effort on the part of our staff to prepare themselves properly. Having addtional staff would greatly benefit the students in our program but funds are needed to pay for the needed increase.
Thank you for the support you have provided up to now. We are very grateful!
