OP24 PROGRESS UPDATE - OCTOBER 2023

It’s hard to believe that Operation Potcake 2024 is now just three months away, and we couldn’t be more excited about the incredible outpouring of community support that we have received. The planning committee has been hard at work ordering the necessary clinic supplies, recruiting volunteers, fundraising, and coordinating the logistical details needed to make Operation Potcake 2024 a success.

As a valued supporter of OP24 we are delighted to share with you a few key highlights of our progress so far.

Clinic Locations: Our local team has been on the ground scouting for ideal locations across New Providence to construct our M.A.S.H. clinics and we have confirmed 4 of 5 clinic locations in Carmichael, East St. The Punch, and The Bahamas Humane Society.  We still need to find one for the Eastern side of New Providence.

Volunteer Recruitment: Through the international reach of our Animal Balance partners we have successfully recruited a full complement of 96 foreign veterinarian and veterinary technician volunteers to operate our five clinics over the full 8 days of OP24.  In addition to that, we are now up to 43 local volunteers (and counting) standing by to fulfill the ancillary duties in the clinics. In September we held our first local volunteers meeting with standing-room-only turnout. We could not be more pleased with the level of enthusiasm and support we have received from the local community as soon as the return of Operation Potcake was announced.

Medical Supplies and Equipment: We are now nearly complete with ordering the essential medicines, medical equipment, cages and specialty trapping equipment required to run the five clinics. And many of these supplies are already in the process of being shipped to our warehouse in Nassau.

Local veterinary partnerships: We are excited to announce that OP24 has been widely supported by our Bahamian veterinarian professionals and OP24 posters and brochures are currently being displayed in 12 local veterinary offices across New Providence.

Giving Drive Launch: Starting in October we are kicking off our Giving Drive Campaign; reaching out to schools, corporate Bahamas, and the general public to support OP24 by donating the many non-medical supply items required to fully operate our clinics. From newspaper, to mops, to duct tape and so much more. Every little gift will make our mission possible and this wide-reaching campaign gives every member of our community the opportunity to participate.

Videography: Thanks to the kind support of the Ministry of Tourism, the OP24 journey will be documented on film by the award-winning Bahamian Filmmaker Maria Govan. In addition to her professional acclaim, Maria has worked tirelessly for years on the front lines of the stray animal problem in New Providence, and so this issue is one that is close to her heart.  Once completed, we look forward to sharing with you what we know will be a visually stunning and emotionally evocative short film on this important and compassionate Bahamian initiative.

Yours Sincerely,

Operation Potcake Committee OP24
