By Raychel Sullivan | SCIACC Manager
Hello Operation 33 Kilo Supporters! My name is Raychel, and I am the current manager at our facility.
The funds you have contributed have enabled us to accomplish a lot for our parrots, including medication and tests for our ill birds, new enclosures, enrichment toys, food and cleaning supplies! Thanks to you, you have helped save the lives of our flock.
SCIACC has officially been open for over a year, and a lot has happened during that time. What initially began as a rehabilitation center with the goal of transferring the parrots to different facilities, soon turned into a sanctuary for our flocks. While we are still working on rehabilitation, we have switched gears and decided to keep all ~200 of our parrots indefinitely. With that decision in mind, we have been focusing all of our energy on ensuring the birds have the best welfare possible with what we can provide, which has been both exciting, fun and challenging. 200 is a lot of birds!
With that in mind, we have been focusing much more on enrichment, which includes foraging, boxes to rip up, new toys, and overall anything to stimulate their minds. Parrots are so smart and can figure out just about any puzzle so they keep challenging us to find something new! We have also been able to upgrade a few of our birds to larger enclosures, which greatly improves their quality of life. It gives them plenty of room to stretch their wings, play around with toys and have their own space should they choose it.
Things have overall been going quite well, but with the ever looming PBFD disease (beak and feather disease), we have to be vigilant with the status of each individual bird. We have a few patients at the moment who have been heavily affected by it; it's a disease that has no cure, but we're trying a few different things in an attempt to reverse it. So far we have mainly observed it in the Green Cheek Conures, the Ring Necks and the White Fronted Amazons, but thanks to the attentiveness of our team and veterinarian, we have been able to catch it before it gets too bad, and your donations ensure we're able to get the proper vaccinations and medication to treat their ailments.
Thank you so much for your support, we appreciate all of your generosity and look forward to what the rest of 2026 has in store for us, and hope to continue giving our flock the best life possible at SCIACC
