Operation 33 Kilos is an on-going project of the Southern California International Avian Confiscation Center and SoCal Parrot. This is a rescue of 200 parrots from neglect, cruelty, hoarding, and illegal trafficking, beginning in January of 2025. The condition of the birds resulted in the creation of a quarantine facility for medical isolation, which is now needing expansion to provide permanent sanctuary.
In early 2025, SoCal Parrot and the Southern California International Avian Confiscation Center were contacted about an emergency situation. Over 200 parrots had been discovered in a horrendous trafficking case. These birds were being kept in disgusting and inhumane conditions, all suffering from pathogens, injuries, and high levels of stress and fear. SCIACC quickly jumped into action, agreeing to take over care for the parrots.
Over the last year, our dedicated team of staff, interns, and volunteers have been caring for these neglected and mistreated parrots. Through dedicated efforts and targeted resources, we are pleased to report that these parrots are now happy and healthy! They are residing at the SCIACC facility, where they receive constant care, attention, enrichment, and medical treatment. We now need to expand the center, building spacious aviaries and upgrading our capacity to provide permanent sanctuary.
Expansion of the SCIACC facility will increase our ability to provide the highest standard of care to these 200 parrots. They will never again know fear, cruelty, poor nutrition, or inadequate medical care. They will experience fresh air and sunlight, and be allowed to live in large social groups to closely mimic their natural social experiences.
