In South Africa, approximately 80% of South Africans are not connected to the Internet, or are struggling to use it. We provide mobile-based 'digital basics' courses that can be done anywhere and any time - putting learning right into the hands of learners. A real tool for people to lift themselves out of poverty. We have already helped over 300 young people and adults. With your help, we could open digital doors to 1,000s more.
50% of South Africans are not connected to the Internet and over 70% of South Africans do not use email. Many people have never connected to the Internet and do not know where to start. 37% do not believe the Internet matters to them. If they do get connected, they enter a world they know little about. Does this matter? Yes. "Digital skills provide the poor a catalyst to break out of the cycle of poverty and empower themselves." (G20 2018)
We provide FREE and MOBILE-BASED training on digital basics. We assume no prior knowledge. It's easy to learn even for a complete beginner. It's fun to learn. The language is easy. Content is provided in bite-sized chunks. People learn by doing on the devices they already have. The skills learned take them on the first step towards a real digital journey. We also work in communities and with learners to identify knowledge gaps, community needs, and the best ways of filling those gaps.
At least 1000 more South Africans will be able to use the Internet, access digital information, and begin to take advantage of the economic opportunities the digital world provides. They will be aware of the risks of digital technology and, at the same time, will use it critically to lift themselves out of poverty. "An inclusive digital economy can lead to more trade, better capital use, improved efficiency, and accelerated innovation." (G20 2018)
