UoPeople - opening the gates of higher education
By Tali Gourarie | PR & Social Media Coordinator
University of the People is continually expanding our worldwide partnerships in order to open the gates of higher education to as many students worldwide as possible. Corporate partners, organizations, and generous individuals make our mission to democratize education a reality.
As online learning becomes a growing trend worldwide, we believe that education should be a right for all, and not a privilege for a few. This trend of online learning provides the necessary tools to reach those who were previously constrained and unable to access higher education. To date, over 1500 students from 137 countries have been admitted. UoPeople continued to attract grassroots support- with more people showing their support by joining its Facebook page- and continued to attract media attention- appearing in numerous news articles. It worked on its scholarship system, warding scholarships to deserving students, including several women. It also opened a Micro-Scholarship Portal, where donors can help students in need directly. It also strengthened its academic leadership and top administration, adding new board members and academic personnel to its advisory boards.
There are many more students who are still denied access to higher education. Tuition rates are skyrocketing worldwide. UNESCO stipulates by 2025, 98 million individuals will be unable to attend university because there won't be enough places at existing universities. University of the People provides the online tuition-free solution.
Thank you very much for your generous donations.

First report
By Bev Myers | Director of Institutional Development
Since the project's inception, UoPeople has continued to provide tuition-free higher education to individuals around the world.
For these individuals, there are no other alternatives available to them to continue their education. Individuals such as Mary, who survived many hardships as a single mother in Tanzania; Naylea, who is confined to a wheelchair and cannot find a handicap accessible university nearby; Sebukware, who survived the Rwandan genocide and Valery, who lost almost everything in the 2010 earthquake in Haiti – all of these deserving individuals lack the ability to receive higher education and an improved future without UoPeople. Knowing of these individuals, whose lives have been changed, and will continue to be changed in the future, is what fuels UoPeople.
UoPeople's impact on the world was recognized in November 2012, when its President (and founder) Shai Reshef was nominated as one of Foreign Policy magazine's Top 100 Global Thinkers, for his work on behalf of the University. UoPeople also continued to attract widespread support from around the world, with many new supporters on Facebook and other social media and citations in news publications.
UoPeople also released a report of its activities since inception: UoPeople: The First Three Years.
