This spring, 650 students from the New Bedford Public Schools (NBPS) participated in programs facilitated by the Coalition’s outdoor exploration staff aboard the Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey, learning how integral the vessel is to the shared history of the city and Cape Verde. The program was launched in partnership with Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA), and BBC and MMA are in the process of developing the project’s next phase.
The Onset Bay Center had its busiest summer ever in 2024, facilitated in part by the acquisition of a new launch boat, christened ‘Bufflehead.’ The launch enabled staff to get more young people to sites throughout Onset Bay more quickly and safely, including participants in the Bay Explorers program, which reached capacity with 387 youth taking part. Accessibility of OBC programs is core to the Center’s mission, and more than $30,000 in scholarships were provided to summer program participants last year.
