At the height of the fight again the epidemic in China, the Stepping Stones team continued its Home Classroom English Program in the fall 2020. Children, with the support of parents at home, can log into the online platform via a smartphone or tablet to attend the English lessons taught by volunteer teachers. In the fall semester, over 60 volunteers and 30 coordinators have joined the program, providing 1411 lessons to around 518 students.
We tailored our Videolink PPTs, produced preview video and after-class worksheet for teaching grades 2-5. Volunteers received online training from Stepping Stones covering our lesson plans, online platform, teaching context and teaching techniques before they start teaching. To ensure the good quality of the teaching, we maintain a small class size, with one volunteer to four to six students. Students are able to sustain their interaction with the volunteers by submitting their homework or completing the worksheets and getting comment from the volunteers in a group chat.
As of January 2021, 1794 students participated in the program and over 220 volunteers and 88 coordinators joined us, providing 3957 lessons. One of our beneficiaries’ parent quote, “My kid loves this class. Thanks for giving my child a sense of confidence of learning English during the formative years of his school year, and hopefully it will lead to his higher education.” A full impact program evaluation report can be found here: https://steppingstoneschina.net/wp-content/uploads/Home-Classroom-Program_Evaluation_Parent-Mid-term-Survey_2020.pdf
We will open more Home Classroom classes in the Spring semester of 2021, enabling more children to have the opportunity practicing oral English at home and to boost their interest in learning English.
