One toilet for one poor family in Pakistan

Under the "One Toilet in One Poor Family in Sindh" project, AWARD Pakistan completed all planned WASH infrastructure activities, significantly improving access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services for vulnerable families across the target communities.

A total of 130 household toilets were constructed, providing families with safe and dignified sanitation facilities. These toilets have helped reduce open defecation, improved household hygiene, enhanced privacy and safety, particularly for women and girls, and contributed to lowering the risk of sanitation-related diseases.

To improve access to safe drinking water, 60 hand pumps were installed in the intervention villages. Before installation, water quality assessments were conducted to ensure that groundwater was safe for human consumption. The newly installed hand pumps have reduced dependence on contaminated water sources, improved access to clean drinking water, and helped prevent waterborne illnesses among community members.

Recognizing the unique water challenges faced by Village Pir Dilbar, the project also installed one freshwater storage tank to provide a reliable alternative water source. This intervention has strengthened the community's resilience to water shortages and ensured a more consistent supply of safe water for daily household use.

In addition to the construction of toilets, all sanitation facilities were fully completed with plastering, drainage manholes, doors, and whitewashing, ensuring that each facility was safe, functional, durable, and ready for immediate use.

Overall, the project achieved all of its planned infrastructure targets, including:

• 130 household toilets constructed
• 60 hand pumps installed
• 1 freshwater storage tank established
• 130 toilets completed with plastering, drainage manholes, doors, and whitewashing

These interventions have transformed living conditions for vulnerable families by improving access to safe water, promoting better hygiene and sanitation practices, protecting public health, and restoring dignity to communities across the project area. The successful completion of all planned activities marks an important step toward healthier, more resilient, and sustainable rural communities in Sindh.
