Computers are powerful educational tools. They provide access to a great wealth of knowledge through the internet, making information and educational resources readily available to students worldwide. Computers also facilitate interactive learning through online courses and educational software. Only 40% of disadvantaged students have a computer at home in Turkey. Therefore, CYDD started a campaign to provide computers to disadvantaged students who are already getting scholarship from CYDD.
CYDD conducted a survey with its scholarship students and seen that 60% of CYDD scholars who are socio-economically disadvantaged do not have access to a computer. Online distance learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic amplified the existing inequalities in education. These students were at risk of falling behind in their education. Since the pandemic, CYDD is offering free online courses (21st century competencies, English.etc) and students need computers to have access to these programs.
If we can provide computers to socio-economically disadvantaged students, they can continue their education online in times of crisis ;like the Feb 7 earthquake which brought back distance learning. Furthermore, by using these computers, CYDD will continue to reach students and their families and support them with different projects such as teaching them 21st-century skills, mentoring, educating parents, English language courses etc.
By giving technological support to our students we promote digital literacy, a crucial skill in today's world. Computers offer hands-on experience with technology, preparing students for their future careers. By providing computers to students, we open doors to new opportunities for them. In today's world, having a formal education is not enough. Without access to a computer, they cannot reach the level of their socio-economically advantaged peers.
