This week, we share a brief commentary by one of our active Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) volunteers about her experience in our previous project on preventing child abuse and early pregnancies in Mwala Sub-County, Machakos County.
1. What problems existed in the community before you volunteered?
Early pregnancies were happening as a result of boda-boda (motorcycle) drivers occasionally having sexual relationships with young girls. Additionally, girls lacked sufficient knowledge about Sexual Reproductive Health. Another issue was sexual violence. Even worse, in certain cases, a settlement was struck between the parties without appropriate police action (Kangaroo Court) or money was offered to conceal the issue.
2.What did you do as a volunteer?
I conducted early pregnancy prevention activities at self-help groups, church youth meetings, community gatherings, and primary schools. Additionally, I had a situation that was nearly resolved in Kangaroo Court appropriately resolved in court. Now, when there is sexual violence, mothers come to me for advice on how to handle the situation. I give the girls sanitary towels as well.
3. What changes have occurred in the community since you began volunteering?
Early pregnancy cases have declined. There are now less kangaroo court cases. In the event of an incident, people are now appropriately reported to the community's assistant chief before being forwarded to the police and the courts.
