In Nigeria today, we have six centers with functional radiotherapy machines and they are in Abuja, Lagos, and Enugu. "Based on the International Atomic Energy Management Agency recommendation, any community that has 1,000,000 people is supposed to have a radiotherapy machine. With that said, we require finances in order to provide a brachytherapy unit and a Comprehensive Cancer Treatment Center in a centralized and accessible location in Nigeria.
Statistics in Nigeria are not far-fetched - a country of over 200 million people and just six functional radiotherapy centers and are in Abuja, Lagos, and Enugu against the recommendation of the International Atomic Energy Management Agency recommendation that Nigeria should have at least 200 radiotherapy centers. This is a problem we will solve with the success of the OMIFAC initiative.
OMIFAC is an acronym for One Million Individuals Fight Against cancer. It is an initiative organized by St. Cyril Cancer Treatment Foundation targeted at having one million people donate NGN1,000 ( $5 ) monthly for the next 12 months (1 year) to build a brachytherapy Unit in Surulere, Lagos State, and a Comprehensive Cancer Treatment Centre in a centralized location in Nigeria. The Comprehensive Cancer Treatment Centre will provide much-needed treatment for cancer patients across the nation.
Our long-term goal is to move Nigeria closer to the 200 cancer centers recommended by WHO for our population by building Comprehensive Cancer Treatment Facilities across Nigeria. Also, this project will portray a brand awareness of St Cyril Cancer Treatment Foundation as a community service and cancer specialist facility in Surulere. Our foundation has a mission to provide quality cancer care to individuals who ordinarily cannot afford it.
