1.5 million children in Mexico suffer from malnutrition and the children of Cabo San Lucas are no exception, living in extreme poverty just miles away from the affluent resort life. 74% of children in the area suffer from health problems associated with poor nutrition. Sarahuaro is a registered charity serving children and mothers in Cabo San Lucas. A cornerstone of our program is making sure that 350 schoolchildren have one healthy meal a day.
Malnourished children do not grow properly and underfed children suffer from higher instances of illness with little defence against disease. Hungry children do not learn well in school - many fail. 1.5 million Mexican children suffer from malnutrition and 2 million children under the age of five are anemic. An overwhelming percentage of children in the country are not provided with a healthy foundation from which to grow, succeed, and overcome poverty.
Your donation will buy nutritious food to feed one healthy meal to 350 children during each school day. 17 volunteer mothers cook and serve the meals, so very little money goes to administrative overhead. Children in the program are also monitored regularly by a trained nutritionist for improvements to their overall health. The nutritionist also teaches the children good eating habits and instructs the mothers on how to buy and prepare healthy food at home.
We believe that where there is food, there is hope. One nutritious meal a day helps children focus, learn and succeed in school and well-fed children attend classes more regularly because they suffer from fewer diseases and illnesses. Better nutrition at home rounds out our program, laying the foundation to grow healthier, better educated children for generations to come. Help break the cycle of poverty.
