One Child, One Future: Educate to Liberate

Good Cause Foundation Uganda, under its One Child, One Future: Educate to Liberate initiative, successfully conducted a children’s capacity-building session at Masaba Secondary School in Sironko, Uganda, on 25 July 2025.

The activity brought together 160 learners and focused on strengthening children's knowledge and awareness of how to keep themselves safe while at school and within their communities.

The initiative recognizes that education goes beyond academic learning. Children also need the knowledge, confidence, and life skills necessary to recognize risks, make informed decisions, seek appropriate support, and contribute to safe and supportive learning environments.

2. Objectives

The capacity-building activity aimed to:

• Increase learners' awareness of personal safety and child protection.
• Equip children with practical knowledge to recognize potentially unsafe situations.
• Encourage learners to speak up and seek help when they feel unsafe or concerned.
• Help children identify trusted adults and appropriate sources of support.
• Promote respect, responsibility, and positive relationships among learners.
• Strengthen children's confidence and participation in creating safer school environments.

3. Activity Implementation

The session was delivered through an interactive and child-friendly approach that encouraged learners to actively participate in discussions and learning activities.

Key areas covered included personal safety, recognizing risks, communicating concerns, seeking support from trusted adults, respecting others, and promoting a culture of care and responsibility within the school community.

Learners were encouraged to ask questions, share their views, and reflect on practical ways they can contribute to their own safety and the safety of others.

4. Key Results and Achievements

The activity successfully achieved the following:

• 160 learners directly participated in the capacity-building session.
• Learners gained increased awareness of personal safety and child protection.
• Children were encouraged to develop confidence in communicating concerns and seeking help.
• Learners gained a better understanding of the importance of trusted adults and support networks.
• The activity promoted positive values of respect, responsibility, care, and peer support.
• The initiative contributed to strengthening awareness of safer and more supportive learning environments.

5. Impact

The activity has contributed to empowering learners with knowledge and practical life skills that can help them make informed decisions and respond appropriately to situations that may affect their safety and well-being.

By investing in children's knowledge and confidence, the One Child, One Future: Educate to Liberate initiative is helping create an environment where children are better equipped to learn, participate, and develop to their full potential.

The activity also reinforces the importance of involving children as active participants in building safer schools and communities.

6. Long-Term Impact

Good Cause Foundation Uganda believes that empowering children with safety awareness and life skills can create lasting benefits beyond the classroom.

In the long term, these interventions can contribute to:

• Increased confidence and self-awareness among children.
• Improved communication between learners and trusted adults.
• Greater awareness of child protection and personal safety.
• Safer and more supportive school environments.
• Stronger, more informed, and resilient young people.

Through continued investment in education and child empowerment, we aim to ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn in a safe environment and develop the confidence and skills needed to build a brighter future.

7. Challenges and Unmet Needs

Despite the success of this activity, many children in vulnerable communities continue to have limited access to regular child protection awareness, mentorship, and life-skills education.

There is a continued need for resources to expand capacity-building activities to more schools and communities, while ensuring that children receive ongoing support and opportunities to develop essential life skills.

8. Next Steps

Good Cause Foundation Uganda plans to continue expanding the One Child, One Future: Educate to Liberate initiative by reaching more learners with education, life-skills development, child protection awareness, and other essential support.

We aim to strengthen collaboration with schools, teachers, parents, communities, and development partners to create safer and more supportive environments where children can learn, grow, and thrive.
