Because of the generosity of donors, the healthcare residents of Cedar Village in Mason, Ohio are able to participate in a weekly art class called Opening Minds Through Art (OMA) in conjunction with Miami University’s Scripps Gerontology Department. These residents at Cedar Village, with a clinical diagnosis of dementia, partner up with the gerontology students to create beautiful works of art. Not only do the residents use a standard brush, they also use unconventional tools such as eye droppers, trowels and cheese cloth to name a few. The students, who are simply there to guide the artists, allow the artists to work on their pieces as independently as possible. It is amazing to see the creativity of the residents. It's almost as if their minds become completely alive.
This latest semester ended last week with the Fall OMA Art Show to take place on Thursday, December 8th. If you have not seen this artwork, please visit www.cedarvillage.org to view these residents in action and see their amazing creations.
