Knowing APAE Better

Hello guys!

Today I would like to tell you a bit about the work developed by APAE’s Speech-Language Pathology professionals. Speech-language therapists Janaina and Tatiane have recently developed an invaluable work in the area of language by using Alternative Communication (AC) on a Tablet as a powerful resource with two patients: Thiago and Wagner.

Thiago is 29 years old, has cerebral palsy and intellectual disability. He can emit some sounds and make some gestures, but he has difficulties being understood. However, with the support of AC,he is now able to talk about his dance rehearsals and presentations as well as about other activities he performs in the institution; he wants to use the Tablet everywhere and to show it to his colleagues.

Wagner is 33 years old, has intellectual disability and restriction of tongue and jaw mobility, making his oral communication very difficult. Using the AC feature on the tablet, he can make himself understood more easily and talk about his favourite soccer team: Palmeiras!

Janaina says: "it is very gratifying to see the joy of these young men for being understood and able to talk on a wider variety of subjects." Tatiane adds: "I can not wait to extend this work to other patients, after all, the improvement in communication capacity means for them, more inclusion, more self-esteem, and new learning possibilities."

With this brief report, I just want you to have an idea of how much we can make a difference in other people's lives.

Thank you so much for your contribution. Please, continue to support our project by telling about it to your network!

Yours sincerely,

Celi - Project Leader.
