New Play Area at Gouxi Kindergarten

By OCEF | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

Hope this email finds you well!

This time we would like to introduce you Gouxi School. Gouxi is located in Longquan Village, a small village about 40 miles away from Langzhong City in Sichuan Province. The school consists of an elementary school and a kindergarten, functioning as the only learning institution in the surrounding area for a total of 72 students and 32 pre-school children.

OCEF first visited Gouxi in March of 2017 to observe a library project started there by another foundation. Our initial impression of the school was that, despite of having only rudimentary facilities and limited classroom resources, the administrators and teaching faculty were very attentive to the children's needs and put a lot of effort into making the best of what they had. After the library project was complete, the school was very cooperative in providing periodical feedback about the management and usage of its new library. We paid Gouxi another two visits in November of 2017 and March of 2018 and found it to be exactly the type of school we look for to partner with, and so we began a new project with Gouxi.

The new project involves building a play area in the school's kindergarten. Substantial research shows that play links to healthy brain development. The pleasure of play facilitates and accelerates all aspects of learning, including emotional, social, motor and cognitive. In fact, play is so important to optimal child development that the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights recognizes it as a right for every child.

Gouxi had long intended to build a play area to enrich the children's lives, but no funding was available. Fortunately, this summer, with your generous contributions, we made it possible. The whole project costed a bit less than $600. The interior of a classroom was re-designed and re-decorated to serve as the play area. New toy sets, such as building blocks, play-doh, magnetic tiles, and balls, are scattered around the area.  Cushioning of the floor is still in process but will soon be finished as well.  The children are now very happy upon discovering a new playground and the new toys are becoming their favorites. Your help had made a true difference in their lives.

Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity!

Sincerely,

Overseas China Education Foundation
