Ocean Academy Girls Rising and Staying in School

Dear Friends and Supporters of Ocean Academy, 

Thank you for making the world of difference for our little school in Belize to continue educating the youth of Caye Caulker!

Ocean Academy girls are artists, athletes, learners and contributing members of society.

Ocean Academy students participated in certificate classes during the last week of January.  Classes included pagentry, embroidery, chemistry and mixed media art.

Ocean Academy houses played an intramural football competition.  For those unfamiliar, the house system is a traditional feature of schools in the United Kingdom. The practice has since spread to Commonwealth countries and the United States.
The school is divided into subunits called "houses" and each student is assigned to one house at the moment of enrollment.
Houses may compete with one another at sports and maybe in other ways, thus providing a focus for group loyalty.

We begin this school year with sad hearts after Joni Alice Miller, founding partner of Ocean Academy, peacefully departed her amazing life of 54 years on the 17th of September at a hospital in Victoria where close friends and family surrounded her in love, music, books, laughter, reflection, and friendship.

After selflessly giving eleven years to the development of Ocean Academy as Projects Director, Joni returned to Canada in 2019 where she battled cancer and outlived all doctors’ expectations for another five years. During that time, she continued to support OA efforts from afar while reconnecting with friends and family

Again, we thank YOU for helping us to continue with Joni's commitment to universal education so that every child on Caye Caulker has access to a high school education.  

YOU are making this vision a reality.  YOU are changing lives.  Thank you.
