OAKLAND HOMECOMING is providing a pathway out of homelessness for unsheltered Oakland residents through transitional housing, transitional employment in our social enterprise, and individualized intensive navigation and wraparound services. OAKLAND HOMECOMING is successfully engaging unsheltered Oakland residents in workforce training and housing, moving them from the streets to a self-sustainable life.
Oakland's unsheltered population has jumped nearly 50% in the past two years and there are now over 4,000 people living on the streets. Those who are sick and disabled will be prioritized for housing, while those who just need a hand to get back on their feet will be overlooked by these housing solutions - until they, too, are sick and disabled. We need more solutions that can help people before it's too late.
OAKLAND HOMECOMING equips homeless individuals with employment skills, coupled with housing and wraparound support, facilitating a smooth transition to a stable, self-sustaining life. Roots provides individuals who have been marginalized from the workforce with housing and on-the-job training and skill-building in light manufacturing in our own social enterprise. We are demonstrating an effective, replicable model for ending homelessness for employable individuals who are living on the street.
We are determined to help solve the persistent social problem of homelessness, implementing solutions that address the root causes of the problem. Roots has a long history of addressing social determinants of health disparities often not prioritized by traditional medical providers, such as unemployment. By intervening early with individuals who are homeless but willing to work, we are preventing the downward spiral that often occurs with the unhoused, changing their trajectory for a lifetime.
