Project Report | Jul 28, 2026
Tom

By Carlson Tanyui | Coordinator, Nyssa

Dear Donors,
We are deeply grateful for your partnership as we continue working with a growing number of children through Nyssa.
Recently, we welcomed a child we will call “Tom”.
Before coming to Nyssa, Tom was not used to playing or speaking with other children in group settings. He appeared unsure and often kept to himself during peer activities. His parents reported that at home, Tom spent most of his time watching child-friendly content on his tablet.
He had limited practice engaging in conversation, turn-taking, or sharing attention with others.
Because he was an only child, he had not had opportunities to learn social skills through interactions with other children.
His dad reached out to Nyssa after noticing these difficulties, especially during moments that required Tom to communicate, respond, or interact with other children.
Tom’s early sessions focused on building his confidence to interact with others. Gently, we supported Tom and his family with our tailored routines, cues, and encouragement. We also provided coaching to his parents to reinforce communication at home and to shift his attention from screens to shared play, shared conversation, and interaction with others.
Over time, Tom began to engage more actively. He has started to:
• Talk more during play and group moments
• Attempt social interactions with peers
• Learn how to take turns, respond to questions, and join activities
• Participate with less anxiety and more confidence
Working with Tom for the past weeks has been very meaningful for me. I have seen him grow from quietness and doubt into confident communication, even if he is not very loud yet. Watching him, I am sure that with gentle structure, patience, and consistent support, he will do even better.
Because of you, children like Tom keep growing, one step at a time.
