FORUDEF's nutrition program has been incredibly successful at empowering local communities with vital and pragmatic nutritional information. Nevertheless, the demand for nutritional education far outweighs our ability to deliver the training. That is why our weekly nutrition program on the local radio station is so important to the work we are trying to accomplish. We aspire to improve our radio program locally as well as expanding it to the much more isolated communities in the Mamfe area.
There is a large demand for the nutritional education that FORUDEF provides and the radio is a way effectively reach a much larger population with information that can lead to improved diets and community health. The radio program is currently aired once a week in the Buea region; however, we would like to expand our program to an additional station in Mamfe, where many communities and villages are isolated and have limited access to education and training.
This project aims to improve the capacity of the current radio program in Buea by purchasing some much needed computer and technical equipment, as well as financing a part-time employee to focus primarily on the radio component of the nutrition program. The project will also create a second location from which to deliver nutritional education over the radio. A second site in Mamfe will be used to connect with the communities in this region, many of which are quite isolated.
The radio program will expand the current reach of the nutrition program. The intended community nutrition program is unique and empowering; instead of resources or capital, the input is primarily education. Once women have understood the need for healthy eating, the potential for this knowledge to spread and its impact to multiply is boundless. FORUDEF is targeting women so that they can choose to grow and cook nutritious foods for their families and pass on this knowledge to their children.
