The Health Benefits of Comradery

By Anja Schneider | Content and Community Manager

GAIA Vaccine Foundation’s mission is to reduce the incidence of infectious disease that disproportionately affects the underserved, and an essential aspect of this goal can be accomplished through our Nutrition and Peer Support Program.

Every Friday, our Nutrition and Peer Support program hosts an evening where patients can make food together, and serve fellow patients, doctors, and family members. This helps create comradery and understanding amongst all who attend, as well as provide nutritional benefits to patients who are immunocompromised as a result of their HIV diagnoses.

Furthermore, our program has been able to establish an HIV clinic at a local rural infirmary in Bamako. It can be quite difficult to travel to a specialized care facility given the distance, so with the help of local doctors and healthcare workers, GAIA Vaccine Foundation has been able to provide patients seeking medical attention an office to visit. This clinic also provides care and education about HIV for those living with the diagnoses, with the goal of reducing stigma and improving HIV prevention in the village.

Many of the people who attend sessions of our Nutrition and Peer Support program are widows who lost their husbands to AIDs related complications. These patients typically have 3-9 children, so being able to relax and enjoy a nutritious meal reduces pressure for the mother. With a donation of $10, you would be providing one weekly meal for one HIV+ patient. With a donation of $30, you would be providing a weekly meal for one mother and three children. With a generous donation of $100, you would be providing a weekly meal for 25 HIV+ patients. We thank you for your continuous support of our ongoing programs!
