Six months into our year-long commitment to Ocean Road Cancer Hospital,
the results of the program are visible. Together we have provided 64
meals, 3 times a day, every day to the children of Ward III. That's 34,560 meals!
The meals consist of locally sourced nutritious foods such as rice,
blended porridge, beans and milk powder, along with cooking oil and
sugar. Additionally, we hosted a Nutrition Fair, the first of its kind,
featuring educational sessions by nutrition experts from the
government's Tanzania Food and Nutrition Center. We also provided 1,000
pamphlets to provide information and helpful tips on nutrition and
healthy eating for sick children, which were distributed at the
hospital.
In the second phase of the project, we will start a garden on the
hospital grounds, run by the mothers of ward III themselves, which can serve as a
long-term source of healthy foods for the patients.
Mothers and hospital staff alike have excitedly thanked the team for the
efforts, not only for filling the children's bellies, but for providing
this access to much-needed nutrition education.
