Health Counseling, Referral and Follow-Up Support

By Seguya Ivan | Project leader

F SSIBU Mission Foundation - Uganda provides health counseling, referral, and follow-up support during community health camps to ensure that beneficiaries identified with health concerns are not simply given information and left without a pathway to further assistance.

After screening and health education sessions, beneficiaries who require additional attention receive guidance from qualified health personnel or trained facilitators. Counseling helps individuals and families understand their concerns, recognize warning signs, and make informed decisions about seeking appropriate healthcare. Confidentiality, dignity, and respectful treatment are emphasized throughout the process.

Some beneficiaries may require services that cannot be provided during a community health camp. In such cases, the Foundation helps connect them with appropriate health facilities or service providers for further examination, treatment, testing, counseling, maternal and child health services, HIV-related services, or other specialized care depending on their needs.

Follow-up is an important part of the intervention. Where resources and safeguarding procedures permit, the Foundation works with community structures and relevant service providers to encourage beneficiaries to attend referrals and continue seeking appropriate care. This is particularly important for vulnerable children, adolescents, elderly people, and families who may experience difficulties navigating healthcare services.

The activity also enables the Foundation to identify recurring community health challenges and improve future health camps. Lessons from beneficiaries and community feedback help shape future awareness activities and partnerships.

Donor Impact: Donor support allows health camps to go beyond one-day interventions. It helps create a pathway from awareness and screening to referral and continued support. By investing in this activity, donors help vulnerable people access the next level of care when health concerns are identified. Their support can help prevent minor problems from becoming more serious, strengthen health-seeking behavior, and ensure that underserved beneficiaries are treated with dignity, compassion, and care.
