Summary

Indigenous children in Colombia lead the ranking in malnutrition. They do not receive the necessary amount of nutrients in their daily diet. Without a balanced diet, cognitive and physical development in children is incomplete, affecting their learning and thinking abilities. Actions from the Colombian State have not been enough to solve it. Together, let's support better nutrition for the indigenous Arhuaco children currently living in the Gunchukwa indigenous reservation in Colombia.

Challenge

Indigenous kids in Colombia lack good nutrition. They live with a very low income in isolated areas without access to services such as energy or aqueducts; and they do not have access to quality health care. These children are underweight, and below what should be normal height for their ages; resulting from both main health problems: intestinal pathogens and malnutrition. This is explained by their lack of information about nutrition and healthy habits and by common harmful feeding practices.

Solution

1) Expanding the Gunchukwa rural school garden where 200 indigenous kids go to study: cropping vegetable species high in protein and other necessary micronutrients, not common in the their daily diet. 2) Nutritional training for the kids, their families, and teachers; to improve their habits and eat more varied and balanced. 3) Organic soy bean bakery installation at the rural school to process the beans harvested at the school Garden. This way, daily nutritious meals will be prepared.

Long-Term Impact

Our proposal supports capacities installation in the whole Arhuaco indigenous community. The food security of the children will have one guarantee at their own school. The idea can be then replicated in other indigenous schools, growing the number of served kids and improving their health indicators. This reduces inequities and indigenous children social disadvantages, since the mid-term and for their whole lives. The whole idea means auto-sustainability and abilities and knowledge Development.
