A Thankful Bunch

By Myranda Fullerton | DKC Volunteer

Happy Turkey Day!
Happy Turkey Day!

In my last update, I wrote about how our wonderful Shelter Director, Sandra, along with a devoted animal advocate, Pat, never gave up in their quest to rescue Buddy from the lonely, Dallas streets.  I am happy to report that Buddy, now known as Argentino, is settling into his new, shelter life well!  In fact, he and the rest of his furry friends enjoyed a little taste of Thanksgiving this past weekend!

It has become a Thanksgiving tradition to provide the warmth and spirit of the holiday to our cats and dogs.  Sandra, along with the help of shelter staff and volunteers, help create a Thanksgiving feast that ALL enjoy.  The cats are served first while the dogs attend their weekly Adopt a Pet Event, and when they return to the shelter, they are greeted with a homemade turkey.

The spirit of the holiday season reminds us how important it is to reflect and give thanks for those who have helped us this past year.  As a supporter, you play an important role in the success of our shelter.  Whether it’s Argentino’s “rags to riches” story, the continued renovation of our shelter, or those every day rescues that seem to lie under the radar, you are right there with us.  Here are a few success stories from Dog n Kitty City this year:

  • Our shelter provided care for over 250 kittens and 53 puppies this past year
  • We celebrated the adoption of 5 feline leukemia positive cats: Carma, JJ, Alien, Neko, and Sam.
  • Two of our kittens, Finn and Bodhi were born with a rare condition called eyed agenesis, or born without eyelids.  Your support allowed us to provide necessary treatment to ensure a life free of medical complications.
  • We treated 41 heartworm positive dogs, a common yet expensive treatment.
  • One of our pups, Tails, was brought to our shelter with a severe tail infection that ultimately resulted in an amputation.  He found the support and care he needed, and better yet, a forever home!
  • Maddie was found wandering the streets.  She was a microchipped pup, but her owners no longer wanted her.  She is unstable on her feet and is incontinent due to an old spinal injury.  She is currently receiving care at our shelter while she awaits a forever home.
  • Fae is a 2-year-old cat who came to our shelter with her babies.  She took great care of her babies until they were old enough for adoption.  Now that they’ve grown, she is ready for adoption!
  • Our shelter continues to undergo renovations, and this year we focused on our dog kennels.  This meant our dogs were displaced while the shelter was being renovated.  Our volunteers stepped up and provided temporary shelter for some of our dogs during this time.
  • Speaking of stepping up, a generous donor provided Dog n Kitty City the funds necessary to finish our kennel renovations.  We added a heat and air system as well as garage-style doors that allow our pups to enjoy fresh air!
  • Our staff is always taking in dogs and cats from DAS or other, kill shelters that simply run out of space.  This fall, we took in 6 bottle babies, already adding to our crowded shelter.  We do this to try and give as many animals a chance at a better life, no matter the circumstances or associated heartache.
  • When disaster hit the Houston area this fall from Hurricane Harvey, we all stepped up to raise funds, provide shelter, food, medical and other supplies for displaced animals.  I am happy to report that all animals housed by our shelter during this timeframe have been reclaimed by their owners.

As I have said before, there is a certain devotion, combined with true grit that makes a great animal advocate.  Many of us display sympathy and love for these animals, and all animals in need, but it’s the dedication and perseverance of our staff, led by a fearless Director, that allows us to get the job done, despite the challenge at hand.

We hope that you will think of us during this season of giving and reflection, and consider donating to our cause.  November 28, 2017 is #GivingTuesday.  Starting at midnight EDT on November 28th, we will be competing for a portion of funding supplied by Global Giving.  Donations received that day will determine how much funding our shelter will receive.  The more donations received means the better chances we have at receiving a percentage of Global Giving’s Incentive Fund of $75,000.  Global Giving will also provide a 100% match on all recurring donations started on #GivingTuesday up to $200.  We have the chance to receive bonus prizes as well!

Please mark your calendars for November 28, 2017 and consider donating to our shelter on #GivingTuesday.

Thank you, and have a happy holiday season!
