We hope everyone is having a great summer! There's never a dull moment at DKC. Here are a few updates from this summer...
Peanut...
Our shelter was made aware of a special needs dog that had been transported from an Atlanta kill shelter up to New York. This pup, better known as Peanut, eventually found his way into DKC as his owners moved to Dallas. They turned him in because he was going blind with early cataracts, and the owners simply could not afford the $5,000 surgery.
Peanut stayed with us for 3 months while we were going through the process of getting him ready for surgery and determining funding to help pay for the surgery. During this time, the previous owner would come and visit Peanut regularly, and our shelter Director, Sandra, decided that he truly did care for the dog. With that, she allowed him to adopt Peanut, but decided that the shelter would sitll incur the fee for surgery to help both Peanut and the family that loved him. Peanut received his surgery about a week ago and is doing well. It is because of our supporters that we are able to help with situations like these.
Momma Cat and her Babies...
During peak heat this summer, we found that a momma cat and her kittens were left in a box with a blanket over it at our shelter. They were left with no food or water. Without question, we welcomed the entire family! All of the kittens have been adopted, but our loving momma is still waiting on her forever home.
Though we are happy when any of our kittens are adopted into their forever homes, we ask that you spread the word to family and friends about the benefits of adopting an adult cat (or dog). Often times, with a little potty training help, these animals have a better time acclimating to their new homes. Since they are out of their baby stage, new owners do not have to cope with the dreaded teething / chewing stage, etc.
I know it goes without saying, but these stories would not be possible without your support. Thank you to all whom continue to support our mission. Together, we are making North Texas a better place for the animal community. Enjoy the rest of your summer!
