NYC SALT creates opportunities in visual arts and pathways to college for underserved New York City youth, by engaging them in a rigorous blend of professional photography instruction, college-preparatory workshops, and career exposure. Our goal is to help students build advanced visual communication skills and the determination, confidence, and grit they need to succeed in college and future careers. Help support our incoming cohort of 30 students for the 2019-2021 school years!
NYC SALT sees the problem as two-fold 1) Underserved communities in NYC typically do not have access to technology and instruction in the visual arts. 2) Youth from underserved communities are typically underrepresented in visual arts. In photography and video industry, underserved populations make up a small percentage of the workforce. Access to technology and opportunities to pursue it as a pathway are key factors.
Youth with access to art education have better success rates in college graduation and career achievement. SALT's goal is to help students build advanced visual communication skills and the determination, confidence, and grit they need to succeed in college and future careers. Students emerge from SALT college-ready and with professional-grade skills in digital photography, competitive portfolios, and a clear vision of future paths in visual arts.
Since 2011, 100% of SALT's students have enrolled in college and 89% are currently on track to graduate on time. In the past two years, 100% of our college graduates have found employment in their field of study within a year of college graduation. Of the 32 residency graduates in 2018/19, all have received a scholarship with two receiving full financial support. These are incredibly important accomplishments as many students are the first in their household to attend college.
