How do we measure success? Over 50 dogs & cats from the Newberg Animal Shelter (NAS) have found new homes since July 1st of this year.
It may not be as many adoptions as the larger humane society's manage, but for a new small grass roots shelter, this seems huge. With a small core group of committed volunteers, NAS is busy at work, continuing to care for stray and surrendered animals.
The Board of Directors of Newberg Animal Shelter Friends (NASF) are continuing to negotiate a contract with the City of Newberg for the leasing of the animal shelter building. While the negotiations have not dampened the enthusiasm of the shelter volunteers, work at the shelter continues. We've seen how important it is that the shelter remain in operation. Many stray kittens, malnourished and weak, have been brought to us by citizens and veterinarians. Stray dogs in the area, hurt, scared and starving, have been brought to us for care. Without our organization, who will help these animals? There's a need for our organization and we see proof of this almost every day.
We've made great progress with organizational changes and interior finish work in our new building, but two big things are still needed. 1) An HVAC System to provide proper ventilation to the animals and allow us to intake more animals. 2) Hiring a shelter manager which will allow the shelter to be open additional hours and increase the services we can offer the community. All efforts will be made in these two areas, in order to be successful and sustain shelter operations.
Thank you for allowing us to experience this important work.
