Weaving as a Way to Preserve Indigenous Traditions and Create Political Consciousness

By Gillian Wilson | Project Leader

The women supported by your generous donations are able to incorporate traditional knowledge into their work and preserve indigenous history. Through weaving, member of AFEDES are learning new techniques that use the history of their elders to create innovative and diverse products. Women also go out into the community and collect oral histories of weaving techniques and traditions from elders.

Workshops on traditional design and color combinations have not only expanded participant’s skill-base, but have also connected them to their deeply rooted political history.

The women participating in these workshops are motivated to extend the leadership abilities they have gained through designing and marketing their products to the greater community. That consciousness has culminated in15 women initiating a Political Education program called the  “Network of Facilitators” or Red de Facilitadores to learn and teach others about oppression and a rights based approach to empowering women.

Your donations matter. Thank you for supporting this important work with AFEDES in Guatemala.
