Women Weavers Expand Their Products

By Gillian Wilson | Communications Director, IDEX

With your support AFEDES continue to provide training to indigenous women in advanced sewing and in advanced foot loom. AFEDES recently purchased 3 new sewing machines that have the capacity of sewing thick material, attaching buttons, and making buttonholes. With the skills gained from the trainings, and the new equipment the women weavers are successfully able to diversify their products. The women were able to gain a new occupation in sowing, as they were able to sell their finished products.

AFEDES recently launched a new traditional cooking training program in coordination with the Technical Institute for Training and Productivity (INTECAP). AFEDES purchased a stove and household appliances that the women can utilize during the workshops. Currently, 17 women are participating in the cooking training workshops. The goal is for the cooking training group to offer cooking services to their local community-- this way the participating women can generate a supplemental income for themselves and their families.

The women of AFEDES that participate in the Pilot Savings Matching Fund have deposited savings every 15 days. The women weavers withdrew money to buy necessary supplies to make crafts and re-deposited the money when they sold the items. As a result of the Pilot Savings Matching Fund, economic solidarity has strengthened for the women of Santo Domingo Xenacoj.

By donating to AFEDES you are ensuring more women can benefit from this program.

Thank you for your support.
