Women weavers make bold public statment about supporting indigenous women

By Gillian Wilson | Project Leader

Women weavers on International Women's Day
Women weavers on International Women's Day

AFEDES suppors women weavesr and also helps them organize to make sure that their voices are heard.  On International Women’s Day in March, AFEDES held a a press conference at the Cultural Center in Antigua, Sacatepéquez  where many local radio, television and local government bodies were present to hear the women's demands.

Taking on the root causes of gender inequality in Guatemala, these women  utilized their skills in organizing and public speaking to make a bold statement about what needs to be done to support women like those who work with AFEDES.

The demands that they presented were:
1. The construction of a women’s shelter for survivors of domestic violence, which should be integrated into the financial planning of the state of Sacatepéquez in 2011.
2. The Economic Ministry should initiate, motivate, accompany and provide technical assistance to women’s local production.
3. The Livestock and Food Ministry should accompany, provide technical assistance and develop processes to facilitate women farmers to work on sustainable agriculture.
4. CONAPREVI (Guatemalan National Coordination for Prevention of Domestic Violence) should ensure that Guatemalan laws are followed specifically to prevent violence against women, and should push for the application of the protocols of the Femicide Law in cases of violence against women.

By providing workshops on personal empowerment, as well as economic and craft skills, more women are making their voices heard.
