The UCZ Mwandi Mission hospital has been designated as a Level 2 General Hospital by Zambia's Ministry of Health. The hospital will now serve approximately 100,000 individuals from 3 districts. In order to meet the increased healthcare needs of this population, a new laboratory facility will be built adjacent to the hospital. The new facility will increase the diagnostic and treatment capabilities available to physicians and enable new clinical specialties to be added to hospital services.
As a Level 2 hospital, Mwandi Mission Hospital will be serving a much larger catchment area than in the past. The demands on the laboratory services are expected to triple because of an increase in numbers of patients and the addition of new medical specialties. The hospital's current laboratory space is severely limited and unable to meet the growing demands. With no room to expand in the current location, a new building is necessary to accommodate needed diagnostic and treatment technologies.
A new stand-alone laboratory building will be constructed adjacent to the hospital. The laboratory will include areas required to meet Level 2 standards. These include: serology, hematology, microbiology and parasitology, histopathology, and clinical chemistry, and a blood bank. A diagram of the planned spaces for the new laboratory are included with this project description. The new facility will provide the medical team with the a greater ability to diagnose, treat and care for their patients.
Laboratories are essential for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Without highly functional laboratory the healthcare staff of the hospital will be unable provide adequate care for their patients. The new laboratory facility will enable the hospital staff to respond to the increased patient needs and will be able to grow to meet the demands as the hospital's patient population rapidly expands. As a result, the people of Western Province Zambia will have better care and live healthier lives.
