Derick's first term of medical school went very well, but unfortunately we were unable to obtain the funds needed to pay for the second term. Derick feels certain that God's plan for him will be fulfilled, and that this term off is part of it. Instead of being sad, he is dedicating himself to working at the clinic in Masaka, treating the poor of the slums. Although he will not be compensated, he will learn as he works with his patients. Derick will also study on his own, doing research and reading medical publications.
Actually, Derick is handling this disappointment better than we are, as we feel we let him and also the people he serves down. We are hoping that we can raise the funds he needs to return to classes in August of this year. We were so worried to tell him that his plans had to go on hold, but being Derick, he ended up reassuring us that nothing will keep him from becoming a doctor.
