Derick Nabulumbi began his journey toward becoming a physician this month, August of 2017. Although not all of the funds have been secured to cover expenses, we are trusting that others will catch the vision and come forth to help him achieve his goal. Derick is discovering that the costs are much higher for living in Kampala than they were in the small town of Masaka, Uganda. Even though he is cooking his own food, prices are eating away at his small budget.
The importance of Derick becoming a doctor cannot be stressed enough. Every day, Derick and Deborah have been seeing dozens of patients in our free clinic, St. Viane's. Recently and extra room was added so even more could have access to care. Without his doctorate, Derick is only allowed to administer levels of care that a nursing degree provides without violating the terms of his license. The need is so tremendous for more advanced treatments in this segment of the population that cannot afford to go to any facility that charges.
Derick has done a huge service to the poor of Masaka's slums by immunizing children, delivering babies and supplying parenting/family planning information; testing for HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases and providing condems. He and Deborah patch and stitch wounds, treat Malaria and typhoid, and periodically worm all the children of the area.
They have an open door from 8 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., that is now tended by Deborah while Derick assumes his studies. It is important that Derick be able to travel back to Masaka from Kampala when his studies permitn, but at this point in time there is not enough money in the budget to provide transportation.
We are hoping that some who see the need to minister to the poorest of the poor will step forward and help Derick by donating a few dollars. Derick is willing to use his life to serve the neglected, surely we can help him achieve his goal.
