A private donor has promised to raise funds for Derick's tuition costs to attend medical school in Kampala, Uganda for 5 years pledging $5,000 a year for a total of $25,000, if we can raise an additional $2,000 per year to pay his room/board, textbooks, and necessary school supplies, as well as pay Derick's transportation to and from the clinic on weekends, where he will continue to work with the poor while attending school. When he graduates, he will return to the clinic full time.
Hearth to Hearth established a free/low cost medical clinic in the slums of Masaka, Uganda in January 2016. Derick Nabulumbi is a young man who grew up in our Maranatha orphanage and went on to obtain his nursing degree. Derick's desire to pay back is evident as he spends 14 or more hours a day managing triage care to those who cannot afford to see a doctor. He tends to up to 60 patients a day. HIV and other STD's are prevail, with , cholera, typhoid and malaria resulting from poor sanitation.
Without his M.D., Derick cannot distribute scripts or treat more serious injury. He provides triage care, HIV/STD testing, wound care, and prenatal care. The population of Masaka's slum cannot afford hospital care or even arrange transport. Most work 12-14 hours a day just for food, leaving children as young as two unsupervised. Our clinic doors are open to them at all times. With his MD, Derick can treat disease at the source. Expansion to provide immunizations, ARV's, and medications is vital
By treating HIV/STD's immediately and teaching responsibility, the rising rate of these killers can be reduced, especially in women and young girls. Diseases can be controlled more effectively by early interventions that are now out of reach without a medical license. Diabetics could receive insulin, malaria medications distributed, male medical circumcision made available. Offering treatment for free is the only solution to the hundreds in Masaka who cannot afford to pay even for food.
