Brixton People's Kitchen has secured a new spot on Lambeth Walk, South London for our new communty shop and cafe. Lambeth walk is one of the most deprived places in the UK. We will be increasing access to affordable, low cost, healthy food and groceries, as well as creating a space where people can meet and socialise, led by locals for locals - The Brixton People's Market. Our project is a direct response and long term solution to the cost of living and food insecurity crisis.
For the last few months, Lambeth residents have been without Brixton People's Kitchen after we had to close our doors due to our landlord evicting us for no reason, except being awesome and supporting our community. While the team has been organising activities to support people where, and when, they can, we have been looking for a new permanent spot to offer people affordable food, meals and good coffee. A place where the community can get together and call Ours. We found it!
We 've found a space on Lambeth Walk but it is a concrete box and we need to refit it. We've almost covered the cost but we need some more help to replace the windows and run the project, which will preventing our friends and neighbours from poverty and isolation. At the Community Shop and Cafe people can purchase affordable ingredients and groceries, sit and eat together, meet and learn from their neighbours. With your help we will be able to reopen and support the community.
Now more than ever, families affected by food insecurity have a lack of access to nutritious food, and often do not have the privilege to consistently choose fresh high-quality ingredients. With the continued Cost of Living challenges, and our communities having limited space to come together, it's important we give everyone access to low-cost ingredients, and a chance to meet others, with pride and dignity.
