Nepal low-cost water and sanitation project

Summary

Following our tremendous success providing low-cost water and sanitation to families impacted by the earthquake in Nepal in 2015 and repeated request of our local partners to provide help to those impacted by the massive floods at present, we will send a small team to Nepal in order to train the locals how to effectively install low-cost, robust, hygienic latrines using local materials. Challenge

Following the massive destruction after the massive floods in Nepal will also be the dire problem of sanitation of thousands of affected residents. Without proper sanitation is the eminent spread of diseases as a result of open defecation. Our solution which is very effective in disaster-stricken communities is to provide low-cost, robust and hygienic toilets and hygiene kits and then training the local residents on sanitation and hygiene.

Solution

We will provide communal latrines to poor residents affected by the massive flooding. Our latrine design will depend on the situation and comprises toilets that does not use water and pour-flush. We will utilize local materials as well as train local artisans how to build the toilets. In so doing, we will be able to engage them and provide some economic support. We anticipate a lot of organizations providing water and sanitation and we will provide a model for them.

Long-Term Impact

The implementation of water and sanitation to thousands of flood survivors in Nepal would mean that the spread of diseases as a result of open defecation will be prevented. This will mean quick recovery as healthy people are able to contribute to long-term recovery effort.
