2024 Midwest Tornado Response Request

Summary

SBP has launched disaster recovery services to support the communities hardest hit by the April tornadoes in Oklahoma, Iowa, and Nebraska. Working with state and local authorities to assess needs, SBP's immediate priorities are to provide disaster recovery training to local partners and volunteer groups, to grant immediate funds to support local on-the-ground efforts, and to assist survivors with FEMA applications and appeals in the weeks ahead.

Challenge

Through the night of April 27 2024, the midwest was ravaged by a tornado outbreak, leaving hundreds of homes devastated in its path across the plains. For homeowners lacking insurance, this could be a life-altering event, exacerbating financial strain and diminishing generational wealth.

Solution

When survivors of extreme weather events are displaced, communities dissolve and affordable housing dwindles. SBP drives equity post-disaster by via immediate response and partnerships with local nonprofits to rebuild the homes survivors already own with resilient construction practices, keeping communities intact and preserving home equity. In addition, SBP assists individuals with FEMA applications and appeals to increase their award funds and ultimately support long-term recovery.

Long-Term Impact

Many disaster response organizations are on the ground directly after a storm strikes, but SBP is often one of the last organizations operating afterwards. Long-term recovery is at the heart of SBP's mission, and our work preserves home and generational equity, preventing housing crises post-disaster and keeping communities intact, supporting overall resilience and well-being for years after the storm.
